VNHC is an independent, non-profit organization that provides many services to patients and families that are not reimbursed by Medicare, Medicaid or any private insurance.
Why we need your help
- VNHC spends more on many patients than we are reimbursed, particularly if a patient requires complex pain management or wound care to keep them comfortable. In the past fiscal year, we spent an average of $43 per hospice patient per day more than we were reimbursed.
- We offer bereavement counseling at no charge to patients and families, as well as pastoral care and volunteer services. None of these services are reimbursed to VNHC, and it costs our agency $150,000 per year to provide this important emotional support to hospice families.
- The Richard L. Rosenthal Hospice Residence is an important community resource and the only facility of its kind in the state of Connecticut. We often provide care for free or at a reduced fee for patients who could not otherwise afford to be there. The Residence operates at a significant loss, and we depend on philanthropic support from individuals, community organizations, corporations and foundations.
- Equipment for nurses (scales, pulse oximeters, PT/INR machines), laptop computers for nurses, and telemonitors are all examples of expenses incurred by our agency which are not covered by insurance.
